The wild explosion in the popularity of CBD oil has created a sort of “Wild West” environment where the “Buyer Beware” rule is critical for potential buyers.
Not All CBD Products Are The Same In Price, Quality, Or Even Whether Or Not The Product Contains CBD
Amazon, for example, prohibits the sale of CBD but searching for CBD on Amazon you will find plenty of sellers.
How can this be? It’s because the sale of any kind of cannabis product was virtually illegal until late in December of 2018 when a bill was passed allowing the sale of hemp products. The result of it being so recently made legal is that there is virtually no federal oversight.
So, while your search for CBD on Amazon will show you plenty of sellers, none of them are selling CBD Oil. Instead they are selling hemp oil and to the newcomer it’s all the same. But actually hemp oil is vastly different from CBD oil. Hemp oil doesn’t contain any CBD.
Make Sure It Is CBD
CBD is short for cannabidiol and this is where all the benefits are found. You don’t want to spend money for a product that will do nothing for you, so make sure the label says “CBD”. If it doesn’t have that on the label, then don’t buy it. This applies to all CBD products sold anywhere by anyone.
Check How Much CBD Is In It
Unless the label shows how much CBD the bottle contains and how much CBD each serving has, you can’t be sure the product is legit. Some products have such low concentrations that they offer no therapeutic benefit. An average dose from a 30 milliliter (1 ounce) CBD tincture listed with 50 milligrams of CBD would contain so little CBD that consumers would not see any CBD benefits.
NOT EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW WILL BE ON THE LABEL
Inferior CBD is an issue. Since CBD has only been legal since December 2018, there is a huge shortage in the US. As a result many companies In the US are sourcing from overseas markets, such as China where there is no oversight. The hemp plant absorbs whatever is in the soil in which it is grown, including herbicides, pesticides and metals. Yuck! So make sure the CBD oil you buy is extracted from hemp plants grown in the USA.
Is it organic? If you like your vegetables organic and non-GMO, make sure your CBD is of the same quality. Getting the USDA to grant hemp farms organic certification is currently a slow process. That means you can only tell if your product is actually organic by studying the lab results. Reputable sellers will offer third-party lab reports which will list any contaminants or solvents, and tell you the percentage of cannabinoids.
Is the brand open about third-party tests and willing to share the results? When in doubt, ask for multiple lab tests including from the farm and a third-party lab. They’ll list out contaminants, solvents, and the percentage of cannabinoids.
Those are the most important things to look for when buying CBD. If all of these requirements have been met then you are most likely in good hands.
